Knitting Free

Happy Fourth of July folks! Been spending most of the day knitting (And catching up on sleep while I've been filling in for my boss.)

I'm away from my digital camera but I took a few pictures with my cell to show what's going on (And that I truly am knitting!)

First, the finished project!

I still need to get to a UPS store and ship it to my friend in Minnesota. He'll be able to put this to great use.

The pattern comes from Charmed Knits. This is based off the First year scarf from the movies, although it's done in Caron Simply Soft Black and Autumn Red.

It's about 6 feet long and very soft. Very hard to let it go because it's actually pretty gorgeous. The pictures do not do it justice.

And for the two projects in the works. Another scarf.

This one, a paid commission for my friend going back to college in the fall. I'm actually going to make two of these. (Another for a buddy in California.) The colors the closest I could find here in Wichita to match Gryfindor colors from Harry Potter.

The yarn being used is from Lion Brand, from the new Vanna's Choice. Mustard and Brick. It's not as soft as the Caron's Simply Soft, but the two color choices really seem to match well and the feel is starting to grow on me.

I'm still 4 stripes from the end and then time for fringe.

And lastly, my first attempt at a blanket.

A pattern from Lion Brand that you can find here. It's also my first attempt at Cable. However, I'm really enjoying it. The Wool-Ease thick and quick knits up really quickly. And the color is coming out better than I expected. On the skien, it looks like a deep wine or purple, but it takes on different hues in different lights. Sometimes more red, sometimes it even has a copper sheen to it.

I'm currently on panel 2 out of five and trying to decide if I am going to keep this for myself or let my new roommate take it. I do think that I'll be making another one in the charcoal color for my sister for x-mas.

Exciting, I picked up a couple books last night. One by Elizabeth Zimmerman, The Opinionated Knitter. I really want to make the Garter Stritch Blanket in it, in the EcoWool. A dark chocolate brown I think would be great.
The other, I'm finding really great to read! The Knitter's book of Yarn. It's very informative. When you're just kind of jumping into knitting, it makes sense to pick up a copy and read through it. It's fun to look at the different types of yarn and think "I love this! I want this!" but knowing what you can use it for and how it'll be best used, what type it is...etc, I think it's really helping me out.
Happy Holidays and back to knitting for me!
